Rings and Things and King of Kings

December 2, 2014

My home was burglarized this past year.  Jewelry was taken, including my engagement ring, my mother’s ring, my class ring, and many other less valuable items, but yet all were sentimental.  I wore my engagement ring on my right ring finger in memory of my ex-husband who passed away in 2007.  The back of the engagement ring was thin and broken and I had taken it off until I could get around to having it fixed - someday.  The thieves were unaware of the sentimental value of the little diamond they were stealing that day.   As for my mother’s ring, I cried when I told her it was stolen.  It felt like a piece of my heart was stolen as well.  Her response: “Well, honey.  At least you still have me.”  That’s all I needed to hear.

These days I don’t buy much jewelry because it’s all material things that thieves can steal.  But since the break-in I purchased two inexpensive rings that I wear all the time.  They can still be stolen at any time but they remind me daily to have no doubt and to have no fear.  The one on my right hand (replacing my stolen engagement ring) bears the verse,  “Be still and know that I am God.”  Psalm 46:10.    The one on my left hand (the less dominant) bears the verse, “I can do all things through Christ who is my strength.”  Philippians 4:13.

These are daily reminders for me to have no fear because I can do all things through Christ and to have no doubt (being still and knowing God IS – he just IS!)   Two of my favorite verses among many, many others.  They are a reminder of God’s love and guidance in my life.  No, I don’t need rings to remind me of that.  But I have to admit that when days get chaotic and I glance down at my fingers (usually typing away the day) I am reminded to have no fear, have no doubt – about anything in my life - ANYTHING.  If they were stolen tomorrow, that’s okay.  The verses are etched in my heart!  It’s a constant reminder as well to store my treasures up in Heaven, not here on earth.  Thieves will remain on this earth and steal what doesn’t belong to them, but they can never steal my heart away from God, nor any treasures I’ve stored in Heaven.

Where are your treasures?  Now is a good time to take inventory of what you have on earth compared to what you have in Heaven.   Chances are – you may need to store more in Heaven.

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. – Matthew 6:20

Have a blessed day!
