Disappointed? Shift Focus

November 25, 2014

Have you ever been disappointed in what you believe to be an unanswered prayer or maybe not answered the way you wanted it to be answered?   Do you become upset, discouraged?  Have you ever felt so strongly about something you prayed for and wondered why God didn’t answer the way you wanted?  Especially when you feel it’s in line with God’s will and His grand plan.  But, then again, maybe it’s not – just maybe.   Or maybe it’s His plan, but just not His time.   A normal reaction and absolutely nothing wrong with feeling disappointed.  Don’t stay there.  Move forward.   Sometimes we sit and wallow in our own pain and questioning minds far too long instead of asking God for the next step.  We’ll never heal if we stay in the same place.  Sometimes we feel like giving up.  But we need to face it, deal with it, then ask “now what?” Because maybe, just maybe God has another plan and it was not what we were thinking at all.  Trust me, God is full of surprises – but clearly no surprise to Him, just us.

On occasion, we find ourselves back on our knees pleading or standing and crying out to God, “why, why, why?”  I have to admit that I have felt that God misunderstood what I was asking at times or maybe I just wasn’t clear enough.  I repeat my prayers to find they are still not answered the way I would like them to be.  One thing to make clear is that God never, never, ever misunderstands us.  He always understands, there’s no doubt about that.  He knows best and sometimes the best takes time.  Sometimes it’s instant, sometimes we wait.  We tend to question His ways, but His ways are perfect.

We completely lose focus at times.  We keep staring at the unanswered prayer and become stuck on it.  Time to step back – and shift focus.  Shift focus where?  On what is unseen.  God sees it all from His perspective and we only see it from our tiny little perspective.  This is where trust comes in as well.  Just like Peter walking on the water.  He was just fine until he took his eyes off of Jesus.  If we stay focused on the Lord and His plan, and less focused on ourselves and our circumstances, we will find that everything works out as He has planned – and it’s for the best.  Maybe the door we wanted opened was best left closed.  Maybe the perfect job we applied for wasn’t as perfect as we thought.  Maybe an illness wasn’t healed and we just can’t wrap our heart around that, but God knows best and uses all things to work together for good.  Don’t get stuck in what you feel is an unanswered prayer.  Press on and shift focus – to God’s plan, not yours.

Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.  And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.  Romans 5:3-5

Have a blessed day!
